Riverdale Art Walk

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

The Riverdale Art Walk was a great event. For starters it didn’t rain on the event but rained around the event. So there were puddles present but no runny gouache paintings for which I was relieved.

I had many friends and family members attend the event to show their support. Even my great Aunt Betty at the age of 85 showed up to cheer me on. That you can’t beat. I was delighted to see everyone and I thank them for being so wonderfully supportive. They even visited other artists and spread their joy around.

I met many fantastic people. They were very engaged with my work and offered much commentary. For example I heard “sweet, but edgy” “whimsical” and “very unique”. I was also asked quite a bit if I was working on a children’s book because my work suited that format. Indeed I am – a sweet but edgy children’s book.

I am featured in an article on the Riverdale Art Walk.
Inside Toronto Article: Art lovers invited to Riverdale Art Walk’s 12th year

There is a correction to this article. I will be showing in booth 42 at the Jimmie Simpson park (Queen St. E./Empire) and not in my studio.

Rain

Monday, May 31st, 2010

It appears that they are calling for rain this weekend. The weekend of the Riverdale Art Walk. Great. I pretty much like the rain, but my paintings don’t. The ones I will be showing this summer are surreal works and they are painted with gouache (gwash). Gouache is an opaque watercolour and is very water soluble. Like a dog, it loves the water.

Though my paintings are framed, they are not under glass. Instead, I coated them with several layers of varnish (which was tricky). Anyways, when the rain starts falling I’ll toss a charming plastic drop cloth over them – just in case.

At Work

I have two outdoor art shows in the next few weeks. They are the Riverdale Art Walk and Wingfest. Please see
Events for more information on these shows.

Besides getting the paintings ready for the show, I have to prepare my “booth.” And this is a whole other monster. The booth is 10′ x 10′ and needs to be portable with an easy set up. But really the big issue is that it has to fit into the Jeep. As in through the back window which is less than 4′ across. This has proved to be a challenge. Fortuantely, I have my brother’s help. He’s great with conceptual planning and woodworking. So together we are creating a simple structure that is sleek and best displays the paintings. As for how it handles in windy wet weather? Well, we’ll see.
