The Cormorants

Jessie and Bob delighted at the notion of having triplets. However, they failed to notice a glaring detail until it was upon them.

I spend a bit of summertime on the East coast. In particular, Cape Breton. Cormorants are aplenty in Nova Scotia…and Ontario.

There are those people who think that Cormorants are destructive and invasive and should be killed. So much so that our Ontario Legislature will be discussing the Proposal to establish a hunting season for double-crested cormorants in Ontario.

As one commenter put it, “what a disgrace.” I concur. I believe there is always a reason for a creature to be where it is.

Consider the Yellowstone National Park wolves. Once thought of as destructive predators, they were systematically hunted and eliminated. The last wolf died in 1926.

It didn’t take long for the elk population to grow. There was an about-face by the 1940s. It took more than 50 years to reintroduce the Grey Wolf back into the park. More info: CBC Books: The Rise of Wolf 8 by Rick McIntyre.

My point being is that all creatures “have a job to do” and deserve the right to be where they live and to live it. There are better ways to address this situation.
