Drawing Series: Visual Storytelling is a series of four two-hour classes devoted to cartooning, comic art, and sequential storytelling.

Learning to Look:
Our study will begin with a simple “thumbnail” sketch that transforms into a single-panel drawing, illustrating a descriptive event. From there, we will learn about the framework and components needed to create a sequential story and expand our narrative to use multiple panels.

We will learn about the Elements of Design (shape/form, space, form, line, tone/value, and perspective) and the Elements of Composition (balance, rhythm, pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity, and movement) and how they aid in creating dynamic scenes and emotional triggers for a reader.

Class lessons will include:

  • ongoing study to improve drawing skills
  • ongoing study of perspective (1-pt, 2-pt, 3D shapes, aerial). With the addition of viewpoints (close-up, bird’s, foreground etc.) for the purpose of dynamic storytelling
  • basic storytelling devices and designs, i.e. what is a story arc?
  • dynamic line of action/action shots for scene and character design
  • panel layout design and creating movement from panel to panel
  • short art historical slide presentations

Learn something new. Improve your skills. Wow yourself!

The class is held on Monday evenings:
